Kenyan musician Nadia Mukami has won an award at the just concluded AFRIMMA ceremony that took place in Senegal’s capital, Dakar.

The four-day event culminated on Sunday evening at an awards ceremony that included performances from some of Africa’s most popular musicians such as Nigeria’s P-Square and Tiwa Savage, Mali’s Rokia Kone and Senegalese singers, Youssou N’dour and Baaba Maal.

The mother of one took home the award for the Best Female Artist in East Africa beating out Nikita Kering’, Fena Gitu.

This isn’t the first time Mukami has participated at the AFRIMMAs. In 2020, she took the stage, alongside her fellow African musicians and gave a performance of her songs “Lola” and “Jipe.”

Other winners of the night included Nigerians Burna Boy who took home the award Best Album and Best African Act, Davido won the Best Inspirational Song for “Stand Strong” and Best African Pop for “High” his collaboration with Adekunle Gold while Wizkid took home the Best West African Act award.

AFRIMA aims to connect African musicians to global markets while embracing the continent’s cultural diversity and heritage, organizers say.

“This is such an exciting moment in African music and we are proud of the way these artists have been able to cross over to several markets both on the home front and even globally,” said Mike Dada, executive director for the event.

More than 9,000 entries were submitted for this year’s contest, the highest since its inception in 2014. The winners beat out more than 380 entries in 39 categories representing five regions in Africa as well as the diaspora.
